Fall is here in its crimson glory, but also with brisk breezes and a sudden drop in temperature. Without the right protection, this could spell a major moisture-loss emergency for your skin - dullness, flakiness, redness and all! But with the right regimen, this transitional season provides the perfect opportunity to address all the damage your skin suffered under the summer sun and to nourish it properly before we head into winter.
1. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize
Crisp fall air is a pleasure to breathe in but leaves your skin parched. You have to supply more moisture in all steps of your skin care regimen, starting with your cleanser. Opt for gentle, hydrating cleansing milk or cream over foaming and gel types. Also, start using a more emollient (i.e. thicker) moisturizer than what you used over the summer. This will help create a protective barrier on the outer layer of your skin to reduce loss of moisture - and surface wrinkles.
2. Exfoliate and Treat
Exfoliation is an effective way to treat flaky skin and to shed dead skin cells. Just make sure you are very, very gentle and limit it to once a week. It also is the perfect complement to your fall serum, as exfoliating helps other skin care products to penetrate deeper into your skin to really do their job.
Now, we all enter fall with signs of photo-aging, even those of us that didn’t spend every summer weekend on a beach. To target and treat sun spots, hyper-pigmentation, freckles, fine wrinkles and loss of elasticity, exfoliate!
3. Don’t Slack Off on Sun Protection
The sun may be less glaring and the days shorter, but UVA (key culprit of photo-aging) levels remain pretty constant year round. So you need sun protection year round. If you have to make one change to your skin care routine, this is it.
